Rocky's question:
"
I wasn't born with a beautiful face.  I've suffered all my life due to my looks.  My self-esteem, job, social life...everything has suffered. I've saved up some money over the years, and I'm considering a face makeover.  This surgery may turn everything around for me.  What do you think?"

Dear Rocky,
This decision is potentially a life altering event for you.  You feel hopeful, because you think your current looks are barring you from living more successful, and with your appearance altered by a face life, your life will be turned around.   While I am not discouraging your face lift, you might consider what is really missing in your life.  Is it just an attractive physical appearance or is there something deeper inside you that is also missing?   I sense that you many also be lacking a positive mental image of yourself.   A face lift to change your appearance probably won't fix that.   To be on the safe side, consider getting counseling in tandem with the face lift.

I recall a related story.  "A man visiting a new town asked a man walking on the block about the people in the neighborhood.   He said he wanted to know, because the people where he lived were unfriendly and contentious, and he was looking for a new place to live.   He was informed that the people in this neighborhood were probably just like the people in his present neighborhood."  The moral of this story is that we carry the seeds of our problem with us wherever we go, because we are more often then not...the problem.

There may be some truth and application of the above story to your situation.  What is causing the neighbors to be unfriendly and contentious?  Probably, their attitudes are simply a mirror of the way the man treated them.  Likewise, your problems with other people at work and social situations could be related to how you feel about your appearance and less about how they feel about your appearance.  To ensure that you are not carrying the seeds of your problem, I would consider some counseling prior to the face makeover.   It will help you to prepare yourself mentally both before and after the operation.  Good luck and hopefully...good looks.
